What is the difference between proofreading and copyediting?

So, you’ve finished your book… Congratulations!

Now what?

Even if you’ve gone through and cleaned your manuscript up, it’s always worth getting another set of eyes on your writing. Hiring an editor is key to ensuring your manuscript is ready to publish or submit. But you may see the words “proofreading” and “copyediting” being thrown around and you’re not sure what you need. I’m going to explain the basics of proofreading and copyediting for you here.

What is copyediting?

Copyediting is a thorough comb-through of your manuscript, not only checking for errors but refining and elevating the text. It involves:

  • Working on a raw text, often a first or second draft.
  • Checking for punctuation, spelling, and grammatical errors.
  • Making larger changes to improve flow, tone, and clarity (but not substantial rewriting).
  • Flagging plot/character/setting inconsistencies.
  • Making changes to ensure style is consistent (e.g. regional spellings, numbers, date format, etc.).
  • Flagging potential factual inaccuracies or legal issues.
  • Providing feedback for potential rewrites.

This is done before proofreading.

What is proofreading?

Proofreading is the “crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s” stage of editing. It usually involves:

  • Working on an edited, final draft.
  • Checking for essential punctuation, spelling, and grammatical errors (e.g. making sure you’re using the right their, there, and they’re).
  • Checking that formatting is consistent and correct.
  • Making minor changes to fix typos and style inconsistencies.

It’s for making sure your manuscript is sparkling clean. Proofreading is the final step of the process.

How do I know if I need copyediting or proofreading?

How do I know if I need copyediting or proofreading?

Generally, if you think your manuscript requires more extensive work than the occasional typo correction, you will likely need copyediting help, not proofreading.

However, most editors are more than happy to discuss your project (we’re a friendly bunch) and get to the bottom of what you need.

How can I help?

It’s that time in the post where I need to do some shameless self-promotion…
